Description
Sixteen acre estate in an elevated position 7km inland from Weligama with far reaching views over the intercoastal area to the Indian Ocean. Reputed to be where Sri Lanka?s largest ever Alexandrite was discovered, the estate is located in a gem mining area famous for alexandrite, sapphire, cat?s eye and ruby. Digging for gems still occurs on a small part of the property. The estate has been cultivated since the 1880s, initially producing citronella and also at various times tea. Today the estate is well managed with 6 acres of cinnamon, 5 acres of rubber and 1 acre of coconut plantation. The remainder is uncultivated land and boasts a stream, ground water, several springs and some spectacular volcanic rocks.
The estate is offered for sale on its own or with an option to also purchase the 4000 sq ft plantation bungalow and ancillary buildings which occupy a walled 90 perch plot. The original plantation bungalow was built by the founder of the plantation for his grandson and was completed around end 1930s. After a fire in 1989 the bungalow restored/rebuilt to its present state by the 4th generation owner and a two-storey extension was completed in 2009.
